An Homage to Patsy Cline the Darling of Psychological Suspense

No one knew,

who chose to play

songs C-1 to C-4:

Ms. Cline's best-known hits:

C-1:  Crazy,

C-2:  I Fall to Pieces,

C-3:  Walking After Midnight, and

C-4:  Sweet Dreams

C-1

was playing,

when the man,

who left his beer and burger,

Half-finished at the bar,

of the sketchy roadhouse,

to go to the men's room.

He thought

not washing his hands,

made him a wild-man,

but little does he know,

that the little pill slipped

into his drink,

would leave him,

fighting for his life.

C-2

Patsy crooned

a bluesy tune,

when the single white female

walked out the door

in the light of the moon,

to her car in the darkest part of the lot,

Naive was she, for she should have known,

that monsters really do,

come out in the full moon.

C-3

Cline continued

with a more upbeat tune,

when the cowboy,

with the Stetson,

stopped his caddy

for a hitcher.

It didn't matter where

the hiker wanted to go,

he would never see,

another morning.

C-4

Sweet Dreams

describes the sleep of the man,

who can cleanse, not only the blood from his hands,

but also from his heart,

and his soul.

Falling

I'll get the rest, honey.

There are only two trips,

three at most.

Step, step, step-

That's one-

Step, step, step,

That's two.

Dog food in one hand,

a twelve pack of soda,

in the other.

Step,

Step, zip,

Crackle-

went the bag

of dog food.

Crash-

went the case

of soda.

Thud-

went the body,

hitting the steps,

thighs,

abdomen,

and arm.

on the steps,

in one second,

a short movement,

a dissonant

cadenza.

Dropping

Splunk,

Splunk, Splunk.

Splunk, Splunk, Splunk-

Swish-

The sound of slick

magazines falling,

followed by papers not yet filed.

Guilty,

I am

Too busy to file,

but not too busy to

pick up oddments.

Bleached Teeth and Fake Bake

I saw her on the TV

in the waiting room,

looking old and rough as leather,

but thinking she was beautiful,

so young, so blond.

She was talking, talking, talking,

her mouth constantly moving.

                                                Look,

her teeth are too big for her face.

                                                   No my wife said,

It's the bleached teeth

and the unnatural tan.

She kept talking and talking

selling and selling,

but she didn't sell me.

I couldn't hear a word she said.

She was all

bleached teeth and fake baked.

Now there's this guy on my TV at home,

on the Sunday football pregame

Dispensing his wisdom,

Who will win,

Who will lose,

Injury reports,

Behind the scene stories.

He thinks he's the only one on the set,

another set of teeth,

too big, too white,

floating in space,

talking, talking,

selling his expertise,

his new book,

his website,

but he doesn't sell me.

All I can see

is his bleached teeth and fake bake.

Maybe they're married:

the man and the woman,

maybe they're together.

I can just picture it,

though I wish it couldn't:

Two weathered bodies,

pretending to be young,

two empty souls,

two sets of teeth

suspended in space, seemingly,

suspended by two leathery bodies:

hugging, kissing,

caressing, sweating,

biting, screwing.

But they're not trying

to sell me,

to screw me,

with what they are selling,

because I can hear

a word they say.

They're all

bleached teeth and fake bake.
